monroe piercing
There are various types of lip peircings and the position of it can be located near and around the mouth. It is not the surface of the lip that is pierced typically but the canine bite and the horizontal lip piercing does disrupt the lip surface. Depending on the location of the piercing, these are named differently.
- A Monroe piercing is that piercing where a stud is placed exactly on the location where Marilyn Monroe had a mole on the lip.
- Medusa piercing has the hole dug through the middle of the upper lip which is scientifically referred to as the philtrum.
- Labret piercing is that which is pierced in the centre of the lips or slightly beside that.
- Lowbret piercing is another variation of the Labret in which the position is even lower than the previous one.
- Vertical Lowbret piercing is that which is done in a vertical position and this will go in parallel to the lip surface.
Lip piercing jewellery
The jewellery used for lip peircing varies a lot and the type of jewellery used for different lip positions are also different. The most common lower lip piercing has jewellery like studs, spikes and small rings. The upper lip piercing generally has stuff like a barbell. Labrets don’t have a ring; it generally has a fish tail ending. Labret studs are very easy to remove and generally have a screw type mechanism. It is always preferable to have studs made of titanium gold or surgical steel.
